Geneological Records Compiled Over Many Years
by Leslie Victor Stanley
1972
Transcribed by Bruce Komusin
Transcriber's Notes
Leslie Victor Stanley died in the Fall of 1995. He was by trade an accountant, but his hobby was collecting genealogical records, especially those pertaining to the Stanley family. Leslie made extensive investigations of the cemeteries of the Cranberry Isles, as well as searching old newspapers for obituaries, and going over the Town Records.
After Leslie's death, his nephew Ralph W. Stanley (the famous wooden boat builder) of SW Harbor ME kindly made a donation to the Great Cranberry Historical Society in Leslie's memory. Ralph also put me in touch with Leslie's daughter, Sybil Mahoney of Winterport ME, who had Leslie's notes. Sybil loaned me these notes in July of 1996, and it took 5 weeks of solid typing to transcribe them.
The notes, given here just as they appeared in his scrapbook, are somewhat disordered, with several false starts and repetitions. However, they form a valuable resource since most of the information was gathered in the 1970s, when the inscriptions were clearer to read than they are now. In addition, Leslie mentions many date cross-checks, family relationships, and shrewd hunches that are not otherwise available from the stones.

Spurling Cemetery #1
Great Cranberry Island, Maine
When the third child of Benjamin, Sr. & Fanny (Guptill) Spurling died her parents decided to start a cemetery on the high part of the land near the shore in the direction of Sutton's Island and about 500 yards from the town landing. (1972 - L.V.S.)
I believe thay made the cemetery two rods (33 Ft.) square which would make room for 32 graves.
Location: Leaving the town dock onto the main road, immediately turn right and follow the shore 400 or 500 yards to higher ground, then turn left, inland, about 100 feet.

age 82 - Revolutionary Pensioner.
The so-called Harding Cemetery near the home where Tom. Manchester lived was not started until Tom. died on Jan. 26 or 27, 1861.
When I visited G.C.I. in 1972 the only grave stone that was standing upright in the Spurling Cemetery #1 was the one for Joseph.
The stone for Ben. Spurling Sr. was flat on the ground but plainly readable.

died 25 Feb 1833 age 82
Buried in the Spurling Cemetery #1
Spurling's Point - Great Cranberry Island, Maine
The grave stone was still standing in 1972 (the only one.)
Records of Cranberry Island Families at the State Archives in Augusta, Maine show on page 15, the list of Births and Deaths of the Thomas Manchester Family:
Under Deaths
Joseph Le Grow died at Cranberry Isles on Feb 25, 1833, Age 82, Revolutionary Pensioner.
The Harding Cemetery (Harding 3, Stanley 2, Manchester 1) was not started until three of Jonathan Stanley's children died in 1848. (Probably they were buried on Islesford because J.S. did not move to GCI until about 1855.)
That must have been the reason why Joseph Le Grow was buried in the Spurling Cemetery #1.
Abigail (Yeaton) Spurling came from Steuben, Me. and may have moved back there after the death of her husband Robert Spurling, so she may or may not be in the Spurling Cemetery.
Nancy (Stanley) Spurling, widow of William Spurling, married again: Samuel Newman, son of Jonathan & Sarah (Spurling) Newman.
Joseph Le Grow lived with Thomas Manchester family.
[In LVS's papers, I find one reference to Benjamin Spurling, Jr. son of Ben & Fanny, as being age 11, & b. 2 Dec 1797. All other references state he was born 2 Dec 1787. -BK]

Newpaper clipping: Obituary
Cranberry Isles.
All of the townspeople were saddened to hear of the sudden death of Mrs. Hiram Stanley,
which occurred at her home here Saturday at 4 a.m. Mrs. Stanley had been ill but a few
days, when, on Wednesday, pneumonia developed. Mrs. Stanley, before her marriage, was
Miss Nettie Spurling, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Benjamin Spurling. She was born on this
island, and spent practically her whole life at the homestead, always taking pride in
keeping the home and its surroundings an attractive and hospitable place for any one
who might enter. In the death of Mrs. Stanley, the community has lost a most valued
woman. She took a deep interest in everything for the good of the community. She was
a member of the Congregational church, and of the ladies' aid society since its
organization. She carried on a general store here for thirty-five years, and had been
postmistress for many years. She was sixty-five years of age. She leaves, besides
her husband, one brother, Capt. Frank Spurling of Northeast Harbor, one sister,
Mrs. Walter Hadlock of Islesford, who tenderly cared for her during her illness;
one niece, Mrs. Frank Ober of Massachusetts, and one nephew, Russell Hadlock of Islesford.
The funeral was held at the home Monday, Rev. Oscar Olsen of Southwest Harbor officiating.
Sympathy is extended the family.

There is one stone with two names on it.
Ellis Kingsbury d. Jan 25, 1825, and his wife, Comfort Standley, d. June 10, 1829. I believe these two were buried in the Fishpoint Standley Cemetery and later removed to the Bunker Cemetery. They were the parents of Mary E. (Kingsbury) Bunker.

Beniah Bunker and his wife Dorcas Pung are buried in the 4th and 5th graves on the left hand side (south) of the path in the 9th row.
8 of their 11 children who died between 1832 and 1841 are probably buried in the two rows in back of them, 10th and 11th rows.
2 of these 8 ch married William Pung and they may have one or more ch who also may be buried with them.
William Pung died after 1880. Where was he buried?
His 3rd wife Fanny Higgins died 20 Apr 1844. Where was she buried?
His 4th wife is not listed as living with Wm. Pung in the 1880 census. When did she die and where was she buried?
Where was William Pung, Sr. buried?
The new school house was built about 1901 on William Pung's house lot.
Beniah and Dorcas (Pung) Bunker had eleven children.
Eight of their children died between 1932 an 1841.
Two of the eight married William Pung.
Beniah & Dorcas (Pung) Bunker are buried in the Bunker Cemetery on GCI, in the 9th row on the left hand side (South side) of the path as you walk from the front gate towards the back of the Cem. They each have a grave stone.
The 8 ch. mentioned above do not have any grave stones. It is quite likely that they were buried in the 10th and 11th rows back of their parents.
The other 3 ch lived to be 65 - 70 and 75.
For reference we will number the grave lots as follows:

Beniah Bunker and his wife Dorcas Pung
b. 14 Feb 1784 b. 13 Oct 1792
d. 4 Aug 1866 d. 19 June 1873
They are buried in the 9th row, 4th and 5th graves on the left hand (south) side of the path. Each has a stone.
Their grand-dau. Cynthia W. (Howard) Bracy, wife of Lewis H. Bracy, is buried in the 3rd grave of row 9, and has a stone. There are no stones in the 1st & 2nd lots so Lewis H. and his dau. Annie may be buried in those two graves.
[Annie P., b. 3 Feb 1869, d. 2 Mar 1881 at Eden, m. Liscomb]
There are no grave stones in the 10th, 11th, or 12th rows.
Beniah and Dorcas lost 8 of their 11 ch. between the years of 1832 and 1840, ages 2 to 20. Two of these girls married William Pung. Abigail died after she had been married about two years, and Ruth died in about 5 months after she married.
William Pung's 3rd wife was Fanny Higgins who died 20 Apr 1844, and his 4th wife was Asenath Fitzgerald. She is not listed as living with Wm. in the 1880 census of GCI. William Pung died ?
I think we can assume that 5 of Beniah & Dorcas ch were buried in the 10th row, as follows:
Elbridge Gerry, b. 25 Dec 1812, d. 3 July 1832 age 19
Beniah, Jr., b. 31 Mar 1818, d. 3 July 1832 age 14

Willaim Pung Bunker and his wife Hannah Gilley and three of their ch. are buried in the 8th row of the Bunker Cem. on GCI (on the left hand side of the path).
Beniah & Dorcas (Pung) Bunker are buried in the 9th row.
Eight of their eleven ch. died between 1832 and 1841 and theirs ages were between 2 and 22. It seems likely that they were buried in the 10th and 11th rows back of their father and mother. In 1975 there were no grave stones in the 10th , 11th, or 12th rows.

Cranberry Isles
A sad drowning accident occurred Thursday afternoon, Feb. 26, by which two young men lost their lives. Chester Rice and Frank Young were crossing from Sutton's Island to Big Cranberry in a small sailboat and had got about half way between the two islands when the boat was observed by Oscar Bulger to upset. Hastily calling help he rushed to the shore and launched a boat when two men joined him and they rowed to the overturned boat. They did not think over ten minutes had elapsed before they reached the scene of the disaster, yet no traces of the missing men were to be seen. Chester was the son of Wilbert A. Rice and was 21 years of age. Frank was the son of John Young of Otter Creek and was 23 years old. Friday forenoon about 60 men were dragging for the bodies and succeeded in finding that of Chester which was immediately taken to his home. In the afternoon a
[party again] went searching for the body of [one line almost impossible to read]
Frank and when they had searched most of the afternoon and were on the point of giving up the search for the day their efforts were rewarded by the finding of the body, which was immediately taken to his home at Otter Creek. The funeral of Chester was held from the Union meeting house on Big Cranberry and the sermon was by Rev. A. P. McDonald, assisted by Rev. Mr. Bolles. Mr. Tower of Southwest Harbor was in attendance. The interment was in the Preble cemetery. A large congregation followed the remains to its last resting place. Much sympathy is expressed for the bereaved relatives.
....
Owing to the sad accident which occurrred last week, resulting in the death by drowning of Chester Rice and Frank Young, the proposed town meeting ball has been given up.

Stanley Cemetery
Old House Hill
GCI, Me
Row 1
As you enter the cemetery turning left there is a long space (20 ft or more) before you come to Emma Berlim's G.S. There is a lot between Gus Birlem's G.S. and Mary Hamor's. Was Elma C. (Stanley) Johnson buried there?
There is 12 feet or more open space between Harris Hamor's G.S. and the fence on the south side toward Story Cottage.
Row 2
There is 16 or 18 feet of open space between Edward J. Stanley's G.S. and George O. Johnson's G.S.
row3
Was Charles Emery Richardson (peter) buried beside his mother (in the path)? The other grave sites seem to be all taken.
3rd row lot 33a - Charles Emery Richardson, b. 14 Jan 1885, d. 14 July 1971
son of Mary Catherine Richardson & Meltiah J. Richardson
Row 4
There is one or two grave sites between Lewis W. Stanley's G.S. (son of Abraham & Dorcas) and Freddie T. Bulger (son of Samuel & Mary Bulger) G.S. Next to Freddie T. Bulger is his brother Frankie W. Bulger and then there is a space of about 20 feet or more to the fence with no stones.
Row 5
There is one lot between William Gilley, Jr. and Samuel N. Bulger with no stone. Next to Sam is his wife Mary L. (Stanley) Bulger and then there is 12 feet or more to the fence line with no stones.
Row 6
There is about 15 feet with no stones between Capt. John Stanley G.S. and Arthur A. Joy's G.S.
Row 7
There is an open space of 10 feet or more between Clarence H. Crosby's G.S. and that of Michael Bulger and there seems to be room for a grave between Enoch J. Bulger grave and the fence line.

Stanley Cemetery #2
Old House Hill
Great Cranberry Island, Maine
When Thomas Stanley, 3rd., b. 16 Sept 1813, son of Thomas C. and Mary (Lurvey) Stanley, Jr., died on 4 Dec 1838 his parents decided not to bury him in the Stanley Cemetery on the Fish Point. They decided to start a new cemetery on their land on the "Old House Hill." They made the cemetery four rods square.
