House for Rent

The Hartley/Johnston Cottages

Two cottages are available for rent.  Both are a short walk from the town dock (where the ferry lands) but are far enough from the main road to be quiet.  They are surrounded by more than four acres of woods and are directly on the ocean with a view of the mountains of Acadia National Park.  The location is on Preble Cove, which, at low tide, has a sand beach, making the cove a favorite spot for families with children.

Plenty of seasoned firewood is available, and both houses have electric heat.  There is a private dock on the property.  If you don't want to walk, there is an electric golf cart for getting around the island.

View of the Western Way
The house we call the Barn has been newly expanded and redone, with cathedral ceilings and a fieldstone fireplace.  It has a living room, dining room, three twin beds on the first floor and a king-size bed in the loft (from which there is a spectacular view out the Western Way).  There is a dishwasher and access to laundry facilities.  The ample deck, just feet from the water's edge, is a relaxing spot to spend a summer evening. Interior of the Barn

The other house is called Shorelands and can accommodate a larger party.  Its glass-enclosed great room includes the living and dining areas and looks directly into the sunsets over the mountains of Acadia National Park.  It has three bathrooms and four bedrooms that include five twin beds and one double bed.  There is a dishwasher and laundry, plus an upright piano in restored condition next to the brick fireplace.  Also, there is satellite TV.
